Immunization Training and Updates
As of March 19, 2015 trained pharmacists and pharmacy interns in Ohio are permitted to administer all vaccines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to patients seven years of age or older, based on requirements outlined in Ohio Revised Code 4729.41. Pharmacists and pharmacy interns must be able to document that they meet the training criteria for each immunization that they will administer. Depending on the training that was completed, additional training may be required to administer all the vaccines in the recommended immunization schedules.
The Ohio Pharmacists Foundation (OPF) has a number of opportunities for pharmacists who may need or want additional training:
- The next pharmacist immunization training program will be offered at the OPA office in 2018. This program is targeted to pharmacists in all practice settings who need training to administer immunizations, as well as pharmacists who have already been trained but may want a refresher course. This program will include all vaccines that pharmacists and pharmacy interns may administer in Ohio.
2017 Immunization Flyer.pdf - Immunizations for Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, Cholera and Rabies is a 0.15 CEU pharmacy education home-study program that has been approved by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy as a supplemental course for pharmacists who were previously trained to administer immunizations, but whose training did not include the typhoid, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, cholera and rabies vaccines.
- Immunizations for HPV, Varicella, Hib, and Polio is a 0.15 CEU continuing pharmacy education home-study approved by the Board of Pharmacy as a supplemental course for pharmacists whose previous training did not include these diseases and vaccines.
- Immunizations for Measles, Mumps and Rubella is another 0.1 CEU home-study approved by the Board of Pharmacy as a supplemental course for pharmacists whose previous training did not include these diseases and vaccines.
- Immunizations for Selected Vaccine-Preventable Diseases in Adults was released in 2014, and provides a review of the other vaccine-preventable diseases for which pharmacists and pharmacy interns can administer immunizations. This home study is a component of OPF’s Pharmacist Training Program for Immunizations, and can also be completed as a stand-alone CPE activity for 0.35 CEU.
OPF Protocol Package. OPF has also updated its protocol package to include draft protocols for the additional immunizations and expanded age groups, screening checklist for children and teens, and summaries of recommendations for immunization for persons aged zero through 18 years and for adults.
