How OSHA's Newly Proposed Emergency Response Standard Will Affect Ohio’s Fire Service

The Lindsey Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting an informational webinar on Wednesday, April 10th beginning at 7:00 PM EST.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is proposing an extensive new safety and health standard, titled “Emergency Response”, to replace the existing “Fire Brigades Standard”. The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for the “Emergency Response Standard” was published in the Federal Register on February 5th, 2024. This proposed updated standard would issue hundreds of new requirements that may be very burdensome and, in many cases, impossible for volunteer fire departments to comply with. Although Ohio is not an OSHA state, these regulations will still have an immense detrimental impact on Ohio’s fire service.

The presentation will include an in-depth analysis of the proposed standard, discussion as to how the changes will affect the Ohio fire service, and the next steps about submitting comments during the public comment period.

Presenters will be Dave Denniston and Tom Miller. Dave Denniston is the Director of Risk Management for ESIP/McNeil Insurance as well as the 2nd VP of the Association of Fire Districts of the State of NY. Tom Miller is the West Virginia Director of NVFC and serves as the Chair of the Hazardous Materials Response Committee & Pandemic Response Task Group.
