Des Moines woman sentenced in federal unemployment fraud case

A Des Moines woman has been sentenced to more than a year in federal prison after admitting to fraudulently obtaining nearly $30,000 in unemployment benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to federal court documents, Victoria Tomeatre Green, 29, was sentenced July 16 to 12 months and one day in prison for wire fraud. Prosecutors said Green used her position as a contract employee with Iowa Workforce Development to submit dozens of fraudulent unemployment benefit claims between March and December 2020.

Authorities said Green filed 25 false claims under her own name and another 27 fraudulent claims using another person's identity, resulting in $29,459.03 in improperly obtained unemployment benefits.
