Call for Papers and Panels

The Communication Ethics and Freedom of Expression Interest Group invites all members of CSCA to submit competitive papers, programs, and interactive panels to be considered for programming at the 2012 CSCA conference. All topics related to freedom of expression and communication ethics are welcome. We particularly encourage members to develop compelling panels that focus upon the convention theme of “Connecting in Cleveland: Exploring Intersections that Unite a Discipline.”
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: communication ethics in a wide variety of arenas, such as politics, healthcare, the family, and the classroom; examinations of case law related to First Amendment issues; civility in public discourse, including on-line discourse; hate speech; case studies that analyze institutions’ struggles with ethical dilemmas; responsibility of expression in social media; and related teaching resources. Given that many interests related to our division are shared with other divisions and affiliated organizations within CSCA, we encourage co-sponsorship of program panels when appropriate.
A variety of formats are encouraged including competitive paper panels, roundtable discussions, spotlight and dialogue sessions, junior-senior scholar sessions, debates, short courses, seminars, media forums, and high density programming such as carousels and poster sessions.
Awards: The top student competitive paper will receive a $100.00 prize and a certificate. Certificates will also be awarded to the top three competitive papers submitted to the interest group.
Guidelines for Submission:
Papers: Only completed papers will be accepted. Papers must conform to APA standards and include a title page that is a separate document from the paper, allowing author identity to be concealed. All author references should be removed from the text of the paper. Title pages also should indicate: 1) whether the author is a CSCA member and, 2) include the notation “STUDENT” in the upper right-hand corner if the submitter is a graduate or undergraduate student.
Panels: Individuals proposing panels must complete and use the Panel Proposal Request Form available on the CSCA website. Panel submissions must include the following information: (a) title, (b) abstract, (c) a reference to the type of panel (i.e., paper panel, roundtable discussion, spotlight session), (d) a complete list of participants along with their institutional affiliations, contact information (mailing address, e-mail address, and telephone number); (e) indications of members’ CSCA Membership, and (f) media requests.
All papers must be submitted electronically using Microsoft Word. Documents sent using any other format will be returned to the sender. Media requests are limited to multimedia projectors and speakers. Participants must supply their own laptop computers. Please only request media if it is absolutely essential to your presentation.
Submissions must be received by September 30, 2011.
