SOS Hunger Task Force E-news for March 2012
Read about the ideas and initiatives below, to be part of the fight against hunger!
Buck-A-Chick
Join congregations from across the country by having a Buck-a-Chick sale. Members can purchase and decorate a paper chick for themselves or in honor of a loved one for one dollar--the cost of providing a chick to a family experiencing hunger. Chicks are a source of eggs, food and income. Hang the colorful chicks in a prominent spot and celebrate the fundraising total at your worship services. Find the coloring page at http://www.elca.org/Our-Faith-In-Action/Responding-to-the-World/ELCA-World-Hunger/Resources/For-Congregations/Lent.aspx.
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Cincinnati
Good Shepherd has included a monthly TempleTalk in its worship services called “Mission Moments." Each month a non-profit organization supported by GSLC provides a brief review of its mission, including a thank you to the congregation for its volunteer and financial support.

From Kathleen Zwanziger at Bread for the World:
Bread for the World is asking that congregations and individuals stand up for the hungry by writing to members of Congress about domestic nutrition, poverty focused foreign assistance, tax credits for low-income families and international food aid programs. Your letters will urge Congress and the administration to form a circle of protection around programs that help poor and hungry people. Join the Offering of Letters initiative, advocating for policies that help end hunger in theU.S.and around the world at

New Tools from ELCA Hunger
Looking for education materials, activities and games to teach your congregation about hunger and related issues? Check out the hunger education tool kits with themes like food, climate change and water. Mix and match them until you find the perfect, custom experience for your congregation or small group. Brand new kits available are ”Gender and Hunger Connections” and “Water and Hunger Connections." Visit the ELCA website for more information.
Do you have hunger programming for the elderly?
More and more elderly are finding themselves left behind in a fast paced world. Some are hungry; others have severe transportation needs for shopping, doctor’s appointments, etc. If your congregation has a program that addresses these needs, please let us know! We’d like to hear from you and share your ideas with other Southern Ohio Synod congregations.
