Obituary for The Rev. John W. Tickner

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)

John Tickner photoThe Reverend John W. Tickner died Tuesday, October 25, 2011. He was born December 12, 1942.

Pr. Tickner attended Thiel College in Greenville, PA, graduating in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He went on to study at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA, where he received his Bachelor of Divinity Degree in 1967. Pr. Tickner was ordained June 8, 1967.

Pr. Tickner served in the Northwestern Pennsylvania Synod, the Northeastern Ohio Synod and the Southern Ohio Synod, where he served as an Assistant to the Bishop covering the Muskingum and Scioto Conferences from 2002 until 2008 when he retired.

He served the following congregations in Pennsylvania: Brookville Lutheran Parish, Brookville; Prince of Peace, Erie; Trinity, Ellwood City; Immanuel, Erie. He also served as an Assistant to the Bishop of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Synod from November 1996 to August 2001.

In 2001, Pr. Tickner moved to Ohio and served as an interim pastor for Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Youngstown, Ohio. Shortly thereafter, he transferred to the Southern Ohio Synod to become Assistant to the Bishop.

Rev. Tickner is survived by his wife, Patricia, daughter, Gwen and son, John, as well as three grandchildren.

Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, October 27 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at The Snouffer Funeral Home, 1150 West Military Road, Zanesville, Ohio 43701. Services will be held at 2 pm Friday, October 28 at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 1330 Pine Street, Zanesville, OH 43701. Bishop Callon Holloway, Jr. will preside and The Rev. Brian George will preach. Internment will be in Warren, PA.

Clergy attending the funeral service are asked to vest. The color is red.
