Southern Ohio Synod Hunger Task Force E-news for October 2011
October, 2011
Here’s what’s cookin’ in the Southern Ohio Synod this month!
A Malaria Campaign Update
As of May 2011, about 50 congregations in the Southern Ohio Synod, Lutheran youth Organization, Women of the ELCA and Lutheran Men in Mission had participated in activities and events designed to increase awareness about malaria, educate others about this disease of poverty, and raise monies to eliminate malaria deaths by 2015. As of June 2011, over $41,000 has been raised and sent to the campaign via the Southern Ohio Synod. Even more has been sent directly to the national office or donated on-line.
In August 2011, at the Churchwide Assembly inOrlando, the assembly voted overwhelmingly to adopt the ELCA Malaria Campaign, with the goal of raising $15 million over the next four years for use in our work with partner churches inAfrica. An additional 352 voting members pledged a total of $242,000 to the campaign.
Please keep malaria awareness and fund raising on the front burner! Like hunger, it is a condition of poverty.
Adamsville Lutheran Parish, Adamsville
New Hope and Zion Churches
New HopeLutheranChurch, Adamsville, is celebrating its 200th birthday this year, and as part of the year-long celebration, three floats depicting the three buildings that have housed the congregation were constructed for the Adamsville Homecoming parade. When the floats received first prize, the church council voted to give the prize money to the Lutheran Malaria Initiative, with the prayer that a few more children would be protected from the disease. Contact Pastor Mary Molnar for details.
Lord of Life and Christ the King, Westchester
Lord of Life and Christ the King participated with other West Chesterchurches in the Lakota School System’s Summer Lunch Program for children who receive free lunches during the school year. Lunches are prepared at the churches and taken to designated distribution points. 140-150 lunches a day were served for two weeks at each church, almost four times more lunches than last year. The children were identified by school liaisons who sent applications for the program to homes at school year’s end. Contact Joan Riggle reports: “It was an amazing experience and a lesson in trust and faith that it would happen. AND IT DID.”
