The City of Dayton is seeking a new Deputy Fire Chief. This is an exceptional career opportunity to provide leadership and to play a key role in helping chart the future of a highly regarded fire department in a Midwestern community with a high quality of life. The Dayton Fire Department serves nearly 140,000 citizens providing fire suppression, prevention and emergency medical services over an area of approximately 57 square miles. It has a 2014 operating budget of approximately $36 million and is organized into three divisions: Emergency Services, Support Services and Resource Management, and Strategic Programs and Safety. The Fire Chief is supported by the Deputy Fire Chief and two Assistant Chiefs who oversee the divisions, in addition to nine (9) District Chiefs with responsibility for the Department’s 12 Fire Stations strategically located within the corporate limits of the City. One District Chief is assigned to the Department’s Training Center. A total of 353 staff members provide fire suppression and emergency medical services and support to the Dayton community. Dayton Fire maintains an all-ALS response with at least one paramedic-certified crew member on each responding apparatus. In 2013, Dayton Fire responded to 32,000 calls for service, approximately 80% of which were for life safety and medical emergencies.

The City of Dayton self-manages its own Emergency Vehicle Services operation which has become the largest emergency apparatus service organization in the Miami Valley area and provides vehicle repair to 28 other jurisdictions. Dayton Fire has historically been recognized as a respected leader in training, life safety, fire prevention, hazardous materials mitigation, citizen rescue services, pre-hospital emergency medical care and transport to emergency rooms.

This is a new position that reports directly to the Fire Chief. The Deputy Fire Chief will serve as the acting Fire Chief as may be required in the absence or unavailability of the Chief. The Deputy Fire Chief is a member of the Fire Chief’s command staff and has responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Emergency Services Division. This division coordinates and manages fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous material mitigation and pre-hospital EMS response and deployment.

Candidates may qualify with a combination of education, training and experience with at least ten (10) years of previous management level experience in the provision of fire services. The City of Dayton is placing an emphasis on candidates having attained a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. An undergraduate degree in Public Administration, Business or Fire Sciences can be substituted for two years of management level experience. For each year of experience in the fire service, one (1) year of management level experience may be substituted. All candidates must attain, possess and maintain current state and department-mandated Firefighter Level II, Emergency Medical Technician, and Fire Safety Inspector certifications. If selected, the successful candidate must pass a pre-employment police background investigation and drug screen The next Deputy Fire Chief is expected to reside in the City of Dayton and become an active and visible member of the community.

The salary range for the Deputy Fire Chief is: $90,000 - $102, 650 and includes a generous Executive Benefit package. Step increases begin at six months of service and one year thereafter with satisfactory performance.

The City of Dayton operates under the Council-Manager form of government. It’s governing body consists of the City Commission comprised of five members, a Mayor and four Commissioners, elected at-large on a non-partisan basis for four-year, overlapping terms. The administrative and operational activities of the City are directed by the City Manager and carried out by a professional staff.
