Garden State Chapter




Martha Ferrara, a nurse practitioner in electrophysiology, is the Garden State Chapter leader. With the help of staff and patients from Valley Hospital, she will reach out to surrounding communities. Ferrara and this steering committee have already been very active in recruiting survivors and ICD implantees to participate in a versatile and comprehensive program of patient education, support, and prevention.


A Real Heart Racer
Martha Ferrara, SCAA Garden State Chapter leader, participated in the ING New York City Marathon in November. She finished the race in 7 hours 21 minutes and 47 seconds, raised over $1200 for SCAA, and created even greater awareness of sudden cardiac arrest.

Garden State Donates an AED
The Valley Hospital Live Wires support group has chosen the Joseph Cipolla Senior Citizens' Center in Paramus as the recipient of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Live Wires is a support group for individuals with implantable defibrillators.

Valley Hospital Paramedics Offer Life-Saving Treatment to Patients in Cardiac Arrest
First in New Jersey to Bring Therapeutic Hypothermia to the Scene

Paramedics with The Valley Hospital's Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICU) are the first in New Jersey to bring the latest life-saving emergency intervention to the scene of victims of sudden cardiac arrest. The technique -- therapeutic hypothermia - has been shown to be effective in preventing brain damage in patients after cardiac arrest. More>>
