What's In It For Me?

Joining an SCAA Chapter

By joining a local SCAA chapter, you will help us to build partnerships throughout your community, working with survivors, ambassadors, medical professionals, emergency response teams and other motivated citizens. More importantly, you will have the opportunity to implement meaningful programs, perform valuable community service, and make a difference by helping save lives.

Your voice and presence are needed to make an impact!
When you join a chapter, you will be a part of a growing movement of volunteers across the country, working to realize our mission and vision. This is an exciting opportunity for involvement, for community building and for personal growth.

What SCAA Stands For

SCAA's mission is to "eliminate unnecessary deaths from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) by 2020." To fulfill our mission, SCAA has developed a comprehensive strategic plan that seeks to share information, resources and experiences in promoting community programs and policy changes that increase awareness and understanding of sudden cardiac arrest. Our goals are to strengthen the SCA chain of survival through better public education and awareness, better response and better access to prevention and treatment.

The cornerstone of our success is local SCAA chapters that unite those in their community who are sudden cardiac arrest survivors, those at risk of SCA, family, friends and colleagues of survivors, pre and post ICD

implantees, medical and emergency professionals, police, firefighters, and educators. Members of a local chapter implement programs and activities to increase access to CPR, early defibrillation (AED), prevention programs, and medical treatments, like implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICDs) and drug therapies.

What Chapters Do

Support is an integral element of each chapter. Enthusiastic chapters and affiliates offer a supportive community where members can share their experiences and network with others. They collaborate in their local communities with health care professionals, emergency personnel, patients, and others to raise awareness and educate the public about SCA, prevention and therapies, and public access to defibrillation (PAD) programs in schools, health clubs, and other venues. Chapters spearhead local and state advocacy efforts in support of SCA research and legislation, like mandated AED/CPR training and recognized guidelines on prevention and treatment for patients at risk for SCA.

How We Help

To support the chapters, the National SCAA provides:

  • Start up funding and future funding opportunities
  • A "service center" that coordinates marketing, finance, knowledge sharing, and advocacy
  • National identity to add credibility and legitimacy to the local chapter
  • Assistance in the setup of the chapter
  • Performance standards
  • Membership recruitment support
  • A national program of activities and guidance on implementing those activities
  • Training in both subject matters and chapter leadership
  • Legislative updates
  • Website expertise and online programs and information

The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association (SCAA) is an organization singularly focused on sudden cardiac arrest. SCAA identifies and unites survivors, ICD patients, those at risk of sudden cardiac arrest, as well as others who are interested in being advocates on SCAA issues in their communities and beyond. Our membership is dedicated to promoting solutions to prevent sudden cardiac arrest, including increased awareness, immediate bystander action, public access to defibrillation (PAD) and access to other medical therapies.
