RSA Mourns the Passing of Lloyd Bitzer

Lloyd Bitzer died on October 13, 2016. He was a major figure in rhetorical studies whose scholarly publications and service did much to shape new directions in the discipline during the last quarter of the 20th century.  Not least was his role as Principal Investigator on the Developmental Project on Rhetoric, which sponsored the Wingspread and Pheasant Run Conferences, and culminated in the Prospect of Rhetoric (1971), which he co-edited with Edwin Black.  In 1976, Dr. Bitzer served as President of the National Communication Association. He also won the NCA Distinguished Scholar Award in 1997, the James A. Winans-Herbert A. Wichelns Memorial Award in 1968, and the Golden Anniversary Monograph Award in 1979.  Click here to read his obituary.
