ODH funds tobacco cessation initiatives

Reminder: The Ohio Department of Health Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation program seeks to fund initiatives in health systems and behavioral health facilities to increase availability and utilization of evidence-based tobacco cessation treatment for Ohio residents by promoting health systems change.

Two RFPs have been released and are available on the Ohio Department of Health website. Applications are due August 15, 2022. Eligible applicants are health systems including hospitals and physician groups and behavioral health facilities (including inpatient and outpatient treatment facilities with adult patients).

Background: While there has been some success in reducing tobacco and nicotine use, new products and challenges still result in tobacco being the number one preventable cause death. With an estimated 80% of tobacco users in the United States seeing a health care provider each year, health care providers play an important role in addressing tobacco use. The Ohio Department of Health Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation program seeks to fund initiatives in health systems and behavioral health facilities to increase availability and utilization of evidence-based tobacco cessation treatment for Ohio residents by promoting health systems change, including:

  • Ensuring tobacco free environments
  • Providing comprehensive evidence-based coverage for tobacco cessation treatment to all employees
  • Screening for tobacco (including e- cigarette use)
  • Increasing referrals for treatment, including to state quit lines
  • Providing access to individual and group counseling
  • Prescribing FDA-approved pharmacotherapy when clinically indicated

Who Can Apply: Eligible applicants are health systems including hospitals and physician groups and behavioral health facilities (including inpatient and outpatient treatment facilities with adult patients).
