OSHA Compliance Training: Live, Webinar

Compliance with OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard

The Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act of 2000 revised the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) of 1970 to include safer medical devices, to require an exposure control plan, and to require a sharps injury log. OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) describes safeguards to protect all employees who could be “reasonably anticipated” to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials. Since pharmacists are now involved in administering immunizations and CLIA-waived testing services, this law applies to them as well.

Training Requirements for Immunizing Pharmacists

• Initial and annual training on hazards associated with exposure to biohazards and the protective measures to minimize risk
• Additional training needed when existing tasks are modified or new tasks are added
• Training must include an opportunity for interactive Q&A with the person conducting the training (i.e., live program or webinar).
• Training records must be maintained for 3 years from the date training occurred and must include dates of training, contents or a summary of the training session, who conducted the training, and the names and job titles of all attending the training session.

Opportunities for Training

For pharmacists who have not received training within the past 12 months, OPA is offering a training session at the OPA Midyear Meeting, October 23, 2011.  To register for the Midyear Meeting click on the following link: LinkToEvent[0,192].
