City of Springdale Fire Department

The City of Springdale, Ohio is seeking a fire executive with a demonstrated track record of progressive leadership and career accomplishments to serve as its next Fire Chief. The City of Springdale is located in Hamilton County, approximately twenty miles from downtown Cincinnati. It is home to a highly developed commercial/industrial community, as well as stable, well maintained residential neighborhoods with a population of approximately 11,217 (2019, ACS 5yr estimates).

The Springdale Fire Department was originally founded in 1939 as an all-volunteer department and is currently staffed with full-time employees as follows; one (1) Fire Chief, one (1) Assistant Fire Chief, one (1) Administrative Assistant, one (1) Chief Fire Inspector, three (3) Fire Captains, three (3) Fire Lieutenants, and 21 Firefighters. The department also employs eight (8) part-time Firefighters and one (1) part-time Fire Inspector and operates with a budget of $4.7MM. Full-time Firefighters work a 24-48 schedule with pre-scheduled Kelly Days. The department currently holds an ISO Rating of 2.

The Fire Chief administers the day-to-day operations of the Fire Department and leads the department’s fire operations, emergency medical services, fire inspections, public education, and emergency management functions. The current Fire Chief will be retiring in May after 30 years of service with the City of Springdale and over 40 years total in the fire service.

Essential Functions and Duties:

• Manages the total operation of the Fire Department;

• Develops long-range goals and objectives, and recommends changes within the organization;

• Maintains affiliation with professional organizations as needed to further the emergency services of the City;

• Prepares and recommends an annual and five year budget for the Fire Department;

• Develops procedures, reporting methods, and formats for the guidance of personnel;

• Supervises personnel, evaluates performance, and administers discipline as necessary;

• Conducts interviews and makes recommendations on hiring and promotions. Experience and Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have:

• Strong communication, administrative, and organizational skills;

• Ability to understand and deliver quality customer service and identify ways to improve services and facilities;

• Ability to work cooperatively with staff, other departments, and outside organizations;

• Proficient computer skills;

• A minimum of ten years as a full-time Firefighter with five years of progressive management experience with a full-time Fire Department is preferred;

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Public Administration, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university is preferred;

• Certified Firefighter II (Ohio or eligible for reciprocity) and EMT-P required; Ohio Fire Executive (OFE) is preferred.

Salary and Benefits:

This position includes a competitive salary starting at $92,867 - $144,874 (DOQ) and offers a generous benefits package. This is an FLSA Exempt position and serves at the discretion of the Mayor and City Administrator.
