Special Guest Speaker: Margaret Lockwood-Lass
"I make photos that tell stories. Sometimes they’re from my past: The clothes I saved for the daughter I never had; My great-great grandmother’s aprons; My mother’s Shirley Temple pitcher. Other times they are metaphors: My dogs as adventurers in the early 1900s; My husband gazing at the sky with a baseball coming out of the clouds. And occasionally, they are images that I just had to make, to be cataloged and organized into a series later.” - Margaret Lockwood-Lass
Margaret’s voice is clear: Whimsy, humor and a touch of melancholy.
Visually, her images are conceptual, yet documentary. Some use traditional film images mixed with digital images and computer manipulation. Others employ text on the images. Recent images are topped with paint, pencil and charcoal, as well as printed on cloth and other non-traditional surfaces. She has also self-published her photos in handmade or small press run books.
Margaret’s photographs have been exhibited and published nationally. Her photograph, Sandlot, was featured in the 2007 July/August Issue of Camera Arts magazine as part of the Center for Fine Art Photography Art of Digital Imagery exhibit. Her “The End of A Line series was recently seen in Toledo, OH at Artomatic 419 Lite, as part of a three-person exhibit at Parkwood Gallery and a solo exhibit at Owens Community College. Individual pieces from the series have been part of Image Ohio 9: ROY G BIV gallery in Columbus, OH, From Our Perspective: Woman Center, Oakland Community College in MI, and Perrysburg Arts Council 2009 exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art.
Margaret graduated from the University of Iowa with a BFA and MA in Art and Art History, majoring in Photography and Multimedia, as well as an ED.S. in Instructional Design and Technology. She teaches digital and commercial photography classes at Owens Community College in Toledo, OH. In addition, Margaret’s writing and media production business, Lockwood-Lass Associates, recently celebrated its 23rd year.
