Obituary for the Reverend Robert Cunningham
The Reverend Robert "Bob" Cunningham passed away after a long battle with cancer on Thursday, July 9, 2009. He was 82 years old.
Pr. Cunningham was ordained in Japan in June 1953 and served the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church at the following congregations: Maguda City, Shimane Prefecture; Kobe City, Kobe Church, Kobe Church East and Nishinomiya Church; Takamatsu City in a new mission; Hiroshima City, East Hiroshima Church; and in Matsuyama City church.
He received his Bachelor and Master of Divinity degrees from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. He completed his degrees in May 1953.
Pr. Cunningham retired in May 1991. He leaves behind his wife, Eleanor; son, The Reverend John Cunningham; and daughters, Dorothy Wolf, Mary Ducor, Beverly Washichen and Karen Cohen.
A memorial service was held on Monday, July 13, 2009 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Mrs. Cunningham has asked that donations be made in lieu of flowers. She is still working out the details of where donations can be made in Pr. Cunningham's honor. Donation information will be posted to the Southern Ohio Synod website once the information is available.
