FREDERICKSBURG CHAPTER HAPPENINGS
A Christmas Gift for Saving Lives from Sudden Cardiac Arrest
The Fredericksburg Chapter of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association (SCAA) donated an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) to the Alice C. Tyler Village of Childhelp in Lignum, Virginia on Saturday, December 10, 2011. Chapter members presented their donation to the Staff of Childhelp at their annual Christmas celebration at the Village. Dr. Debbie Mack, Medical Director and Lorraine Highlander, RN-BC, Director of Nursing accepted the donation for the Village.
The AED will truly be a lifesaving gift if ever needed since the Village is in a remote location and about 30 minutes travel time for the nearest rescue squad. The residential village for abused children has a staff of over 150 people and approximately 60 children who receive care.
ICD Support Group
On Sunday, June 5, 2011, The Fredericksburg Chapter of the SCAA held its quarterly ICD Support Group meeting. The meeting was held at the Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center. The meeting was well attended by ICD patients and family members. Mary Lou Hollingshead introduced our guest speaker, Mr. Roger Hart, a representative of Medtronic Inc. His topic of discussion was “Living Well with Your ICD”.
Heart healthy refreshments were served courtesy of Michelle Dunn, Supervisor of the Cardiac Cath and EP Labs at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center.
On February 28, 2010 the Chapter sponsored our first ICD Support Group meeting. A group of about 25 patients and family members attended.
After introductions, Chapter Co-Chair Mary Lou Hollingshead spoke about the SCAA and its efforts, ICD placement and function, and answered many insightful, often humorous, questions from the participants.
The ICD Support Group meetings will be held quarterly and feature special guest speakers.
On Monday March 1, 2010, Co-Chair Mary Lou Hollingshead along with SCA survivor Jim Soderberg donated an AED to the Round Hill Baptist Church, located in rural King George, Virginia.
The AED was presented during the church's monthly business meeting and was accepted by Pastor Ted James.
