Dr. Abella studies cardiac arrest and post-resuscitation injury, in both animal models and the clinical setting. Specifically, he is interested in CPR quality and outcomes from in-hospital cardiac arrest.

Dr. Abella is currently a participant in an international consortium to study audio feedback during CPR to improve resuscitation performance and thereby patient survival. He is also interested in post-resuscitation injury processes such as free radical production and apoptosis, and studies these phenomena in a mouse model of cardiac arrest. Finally, Dr. Abella is involved in the study of therapeutic hypothermia to treat cardiac arrest victims.

Dr. Abella has published scholarly work in numerous professional journals, and has authored several textbook chapters on cardiac arrest and resuscitation. He serves on the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care task force and has participated in developing the latest revision of the CPR guidelines which were published earlier this year. He has won a number of honors for his research, clinical care in the Emergency Department and his teaching of residents and medical students. He is a recent recipient of a National Institutes of Health K23 mentored Career Development Award for his work in cardiac arrest clinical research. He has also worked with the media in communications regarding cardiac arrest, including Newsweek, Popular Science, and the New York Times.
