They're meant to be live-saving devices, using an electric shock to restart someone's heart beat. But emergency responders warn: automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, won't do their jobs unless they're taken care of.
AEDs can be easy to use and they've been credited with saving lives. That's why they're found in more and more places these days. But officials say if they can't be turned on, they can't save lives.
They're in our schools, workplaces and government buildings. Our EMS workers regularly use them.
"You're seeing them in shopping malls," says Lisa Schuetz, a recreation and sports director at UW-Eau Claire. "Every plane you get on has an AED. They're that important to have a around because they have been proven that they can save lives."
