A volunteer fireman who collapsed while battling a house fire in the 2800 block of Atlantic Avenue Saturday morning was revived and is doing well, according to Longport Fire Chief Lavon "Lefty" Clayton.

Rescue workers used an automated external defibrillator to revive Capt. Richard Hirsch, 58, a 39-year veteran of the squad, who collapsed and stopped breathing just after he came out of the house, the chief said.

"Longport Police Officer Chris Ricciotti was next to Richard and saw he was not breathing and immediately started respiration," Clayton said Tuesday. "Margate Firefighter Chris Maher began chest compressions and Longport Firefighter Michael Simon ran to the ambulance and grabbed the AED."
