The numbers are staggering.
Only about 5 percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims survive without defibrillation in the first critical minutes of collapse. After that, only 5 percent of those who survive the trip to the hospital make it out alive.
According to the American Heart Association, after the heart stops pumping blood, it takes only four to six minutes for brain damage to occur. About 325,000 people a year die of coronary heart disease in an emergency department or before reaching a hospital.
Fortunately for Catskill resident James Brennan of Hudson Avenue, it took less than four minutes for emergency responders to arrive after his collapse.
