DESCRIPTION:\nOverview\n\nSudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is one of the leading
causes of death in the United States claiming more lives than lung cancer\
, breast cancer and AIDS combined. Each year more than 335\,000 people die
of SCA (a sudden and abrupt loss of heart function caused by a chaotic hear
t rhythm disturbance\, resulting in death\, if not prevented with early def
ibrillation). Heart rhythm problems that result in SCA are related to the e
lectrical impulses and muscle strength of the heart and can attack anyone o
f almost any age. Despite best practice efforts\, it is estimated that only
20-30% of those that have indication or at risk for SCA are receiving trea
tment to prevent it.\n\nThis educational activity will provide the attendee
with the competencies necessary to diagnose\, to treat and/or to refer pat
ients for treatment in order to prevent SCA. Some of the topics to be prese
nted will include an up to date review of the causes of SCA\, current and f
uture risk stratification for predicting SCA\, including racial and gender
differences\, a review of genetic predisposition to SCA\, antiarrhythmia dr
ug therapy and ICD's available to protect those at risk for SCA. In additio
n\, discussion of various disease states such as heart failure and atrial f
ibrillation\, and their relation to SCA will take place. This program will
provide attendees with information on cardiac imaging methods and their use
in indentifying those at risk for SCA and providing effective treatment.\n
\nTarget Audience\n\nThe program's target audience will include primary car
 e physicians\, cardiologists\, electrophysiologists\, nurses\, emergency me
dical technicians and other healthcare professionals with an interest in ar
rhythmias and Sudden Cardiac Arrest prevention.\n\nLocation\n\nHyatt Regenc
