Call for Applications
RSA Seminar in cooperation with ISHR

RSA is pleased to continue its partnership with the International Society for the History of Rhetoric in sponsoring a special seminar at the RSA Conference.

For RSA14, the seminar leader will be Professor Mike Edwards of Roehampton University (UK). Before joining the faculty at Roehampton, Professor Edwards was Head of Classics at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. He currently serves as vice-president of the International Society for the History of Rhetoric and as a Senior Research Fellow of the Institute of Classical Studies and the Institute of English Studies.

The seminar is entitled: “ Lysias and Logography.”

The seminar will take place during the RSA14 conference with sessions scheduled for Friday (5/23) from 9:30am-12:15 and Saturday (5/24) from 2:15-4:45. Application letters should outline interest and background and be sent directly to Professor Lawrence Green - lgreen@usc.edu – by January 29, 2014. Space is limited.

Professor Edwards describes the focus of the seminar:

“My proposal is to consider the theory and practice of speechwriting, using Lysias as the main model. The first session will cover ancient rhetorical theory in various ways: the five parts of rhetoric (concentrating for the purposes of this seminar on invention, arrangement and style); how orators were trained (progymnasmata), ending with examples and analyses of controversiae and suasoriae. In the second session we will look at the actual practice of speechwriting, with special reference to Lysias and comparing his methods with other members of the canon of ten Attic orators.”
