Complete Story 02/18/2010HIPAA Privacy & Security Rule UpdatesThe American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (the "Stimulus Bill"), which President Obama signed on Feb. 17, 2009, changes several requirements related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
HIPAA is intended to protect the privacy of protected health information (PHI). To accomplish this, HIPAA regulates how covered entities and their business associates use and disclose PHI. A covered entity is either a health plan, a health care provider who conducts certain transactions in electronic form or a health care clearinghouse. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) provides incentives for health care providers to implement and utilize electronic health records (EHR).
Doctors of chiropractic and their staff should be aware of the requirements. Click here to view the OSCA's position paper.
Just today, CMS issued a Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) for the Medicare and Medicaid EHR incentive programs established by the Recovery Act. The HITECH provisions are a subset of the Recovery Act.
CMS will conduct a teleconference on Tuesday, February 23, to teach the basics of the rule from CMS experts. The call will be held from 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm EST. Participants will learn about:
