Medical Home Bill Approved By Ohio House

HB 198, which creates a Medical Home Education Demonstration Project involving the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and three other medical schools that have a record of graduating primary care physicians, was unanimously approved by the Ohio House of Representatives, March 3.  In addition to creating the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) Education Pilot Project to advance medical education, the bill creates a PCMH Education Advisory Group to implement and administer the project.

The OOA and OU-COM will each appoint a DO to serve on the Advisory Group.  The bill also calls for the creation of a primary care medical student component of the Choose Ohio First scholarship program.  HB 198 is now under review by the Ohio Senate Human Services & Aging Committee.  The AOA sent a letter of support to all members of the Senate committee, and the OOA plans to testify in support of the bill before the legislature adjourns for primary elections.  The OOA has been actively involved in drafting and amending the legislation, which is now in its eleventh version. Rep. Peggy Lehner (R-Dayton), primary sponsor of the bill, will be keynote speaker during the Ohio Osteopathic Symposium Family Medicine Day luncheon on Thursday, April 29.
