HRSA Announces Grant Program for Primary Care Expansion

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) released additional information regarding the Primary Care Residency Expansion Program, which allocates $168 million to increase the number of residents in primary care specialties (family medicine, general internal medicine and general pediatrics.)  The purpose of the program is to increase the number of primary care providers by expanding the number of residents in primary care programs.  The positions are in addition to existing residency positions, even if the hospital is over its Medicare FTE cap.  Set to run from Sept. 30, 2010 - Sept. 29, 2015, the program provides financial support of $80,000 per-resident per-year, for a total of 3 years per-resident.  All funding will be provided in FY 2010, with limited draw-down each year.

Those eligible to apply for the new positions include public or not-for-profit hospitals, osteopathic or allopathic medical schools, or certain other public or private not-for-profit entities.  Applicants may request funding for only one specialty program per application (though they may submit an application for each specialty.)  Funding may be used only for accredited family medicine, general internal medicine or general pediatric programs.  Priority will be given to programs that conduct training in community-based settings.  Applications for the new positions are due to HRSA by Monday, July 19, 2010, at 5 p.m. EDT.
