ONC Launches Temporary Certification Program

On June 24, the Office of the National Coordinator for HIT (ONC) published the final rule on the temporary certification program for health information technology. This rule establishes a temporary program under which HIT can be tested and certified for use by eligible professionals and hospitals to meet requirements specified under meaningful use.

This final rule describes and establishes the process under which organizations may become an ONC- authorized testing and certification body (ONC-ATCB) to test and certify Complete EHRs and/or EHR modules in accordance with all applicable certification criteria adopted by the Secretary. ONC-ATCB's will be required to provide to ONC weekly a current list of Complete EHRs or EHR modules that have been tested and certified and could be used to meet the definition of Certified EHR technology. ONC will maintain and post on its website a Certified HIT Products List (CHPL).  This list will be the source of all certified complete EHRs and/or EHR modules that could be used by eligible professionals to meet requirements of using certified EHR technology.
