OSA Farmer Leaders Elected to ASA Executive Committee
WORTHINGTON, Ohio - Two Ohio Soybean Association (OSA) farmer leaders were recently elected to positions on the American Soybean Association (ASA) executive committee during the ASA Board of Directors meeting in St. Louis. Rob Joslin of Shelby County was elected president, and Joe Steiner of Warren County was elected treasurer.
The ASA executive committee is made up of the positions of president, chairman, first vice president, secretary, treasurer and five vice presidents.
Joslin joined OSA in 1999 and served as president from 2003-2004. In 2005, he joined ASA and since then has held a variety of leadership roles, most recently as first vice president and chairman of the ASA Public Affairs committee. Joslin has also served on the ASA Trade Policy and International Affairs and the Membership and Corporate Relations committees. He represents ASA on the U.S. Soybean Export Council and chairs the American Oilseeds Coalition.
In the year ahead, Joslin has a variety of issues that will keep his attention, including climate change legislation and the biodiesel tax credit. And membership will also be a key focus for his term as president.
"I began my involvement with OSA chairing the membership campaign my first year on the board," said Joslin. "It was a great opportunity and there is no better way to learn about the activities of the association than working membership. I am looking forward to continuing that membership commitment while I am ASA president, as well as working on the many other issues that are facing soybean farmers today."
In addition to his activities with OSA and ASA, Joslin is also a member of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, Ohio Corn Growers Association, Ohio Wheat Growers Association and the Ohio Pork Producers Council. He serves on the Clinton Township Board of Trustees, Shelby County Extension Advisory Board, Upper Great Miami River Advisory Committee and Farm Credit Services Advisory Board. Joslin and his wife, Ellen, produce soybeans and corn on their farm near Sidney.
Steiner joined OSA in 1996 and served as president from 2001-2002. He joined ASA in 2004, and was a member of the Trade Policy and Public Affairs committees. This is his second term on the ASA executive committee, serving last year as a vice president and chairman of the Membership and Corporate Relations committee. Steiner also co-chaired ASA's Innovative Initiative Taskforce.
"I'm very proud to take on this new role within ASA, and I thank my fellow board members for this opportunity," said Steiner. "There are a lot of issues that will keep my focus during the next year, and I believe that financial security for ASA is also paramount. This is something I will strive to improve."
In addition to OSA and ASA, Steiner is an active member of the Ohio Corn Growers Association, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation and Cincinnati Agribusiness Council. He currently farms near Mason with his wife, Annette, where they raise soybeans, corn and wheat.
About OSA The Ohio Soybean Association is governed by a 26-member volunteer farmer board dedicated to education and promotion, as well as to uniting producer interest through support of legislative activities beneficial to the Ohio soybean industry.
About ASA The American Soybean Association represents U.S. soybean farmers on domestic and international issues of importance to the soybean industry. ASA's advocacy efforts are made possible through the voluntary membership in ASA by over 22,500 farmers in 29 states where soybeans are grown.
