Farmer Leaders Attend Soybean Leadership College
COLUMBUS, OH A group of Ohio farmer leaders recently participated in the Soybean Leadership College in St. Louis, Missouri. This two-day seminar, presented by the American Soybean Association and sponsored in part by the Ohio Soybean Council (OSC), focused on current issues in the soybean industry and featured keynote speakers that encouraged producers to take leadership roles within their organizations and community.
Jeff Sollars, soybean producer from Fayette County and VP Membership for the Ohio Soybean Association, participated in a special session for recruitment chairmen lead by professional speaker Michele Payn-Knoper. This interactive session titled, Selling Solutions, concentrated on successful ways to gain memberships within an organization.
Other participants included, John Motter, soybean producer and OSC board member from Hancock County, Dan Schwartz, OSC board member and Trumball County soybean producer and John Buck, OSC board member and Marion County Soybean Producer.
"This was my first time to attend the college and it was very much worth my time," said Motter. "It provided a lot of insightful information on the latest issues effecting the soybean industry and what I can expect in the future as a soybean producer."
Attendees had the opportunity to attend several breakout sessions of their choice that focused on public speaking, the farm bill and the latest on trans-fat labeling mandated by the Food and Drug Administration. Experts also presented on the biodiesel tax incentive and what it is expected to bring to soybean producers' bottom line. Participants were also educated on how they can best prepare for the upcoming planting season while protecting their crop from Asian Soybean Rust.
The seminar concluded with a presentation by Rob Sherman, an acclaimed speaker, author and attorney from Columbus, Ohio who presented his 21 Laws of Speaking and demonstrated ways farmer leaders can significantly improve their speaking ability and to help inspire others to action.
Headquartered in Columbus, the Ohio Soybean Council is governed by a 17-member volunteer farmer board, which directs the Soybean Promotion and Research Program. The program's primary goal is to improve soybean profitability by targeting research and development projects through the investment of farmer-contributed funds.
