Administrators, Directors, Supervisors, and Billing/Coding Specialists.
Choose to attend the Basic class for beginning and new coders in preparation for the HCS-D certification exam or to improve your skills.
Choose to attend the Beyond Basic class to expand your knowledge of ICD-9 Coding principles.
Each program offers continuing education to maintain your HCS-D certification and nursing continuing education requirements.

Course Objectives:
ICD-9 Coding: The Basics
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the source of case mix points
2. Identify the three distinct parts of the ICD-9-CM Coding Manual
3. Describe at least four coding conventions
4. Define the three basic rules of coding
5. Describe two examples of considerations/guidance for selection of diagnoses
6. Identify four “Don’ts” for the key to proper sequencing of diagnoses
7. Define three ways to identify a manifestation code in the coding manual
8. Apply correct coding principle to diabetic sample situations
9. Describe basic rules governing use of V codes
10. Problem solve difficult topics or situations
ICD-9 Coding: Beyond the Basics
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Describe guidelines for coding orthopedic and therapy situations
2. Describe the steps to take in using the Alphabetical Index and Neoplasm Table
3. Demonstrate proper sequencing of diagnosis codes based on the thrust of care in a variety of situations involving neoplasms
4. Demonstrate correct coding for a variety of cardiopulmonary situations
5. Demonstrate code selection for various types of wounds
6. Demonstrate the correct use of complication codes
7. Identify the four rules of sequencing late effects
8. Illustrate the proper coding of adverse effects versus poisoning using the Table of Drugs and Chemicals
Attendees are required to bring a current ICD-9-CM Coding Manual to use during the hands-on exercises
