DEVELOPING THE LEADER WITHIN: THE ROLE OF THE COMPANY OFFICER'S ROLE IN THE FIRE SERVICE
This 2-½ half day course is designed to present the roles and responsibilities of the Company Officer in the modern fire service organization. The CO is the most important position in the Fire Department organization. Because of this importance, the CO must be an effective leader. To become an effective leader, the CO must first understand himself or herself and be capable of interacting comfortably and professionally with others. Being an effective leader is essential to building a winning team that functions effectively in the most dangerous and complex situations.
The course includes case studies, small group and large group activities, reading assignments, and oral presentations. These activities, along with topic presentations from experienced fire officers, will help develop in the participant the skill necessary to be an effective leader in the station and on the emergency scene. Topics include understanding personality and character traits, team-building, leadership, making the transition from buddy to boss, managing conflict, and ethics. Participants discuss and analyze current fire service emphasis on safety and risk management, managing emergency scenes, tactical decision-making, and crew resource management.
