News from the State Fire Marshal...

As of February 22, 26 people have lost their lives in fires throughout the state this year. Of those 26, at least 16 were Ohioans over the age of 60. This reinforces the notion that the elderly represent a part of the population most at risk of fire-related injuries and deaths. In 2015, 46% of all fire fatalities in Ohio were people over the age of 60. So far this year, that percentage is even higher.

Because of this, I am encouraging you to actively engage with your community of older citizens. This group of people needs our help. While our office will keep working hard to reach this older population with fire safety tips, you have the most potential to make a difference as these are your residents in your communities which you know better than anyone.

In upcoming weeks, please double your efforts to protect these older citizens. Regional Area Agencies on Aging are a great resource for reaching this group. Call your local agency; set up programs and speaking opportunities with them; share your outreach materials on fire safety with them and ask that they, too, double their efforts. You can find several useful publications on our website (www.com.ohio.gov/fire). Likewise, I’ve attached some excellent publications from the U.S. Fire Administration directed at our older population.
