---CALL OUT---How to Bridge the Gap of Fire Officers with Limited Exposure to Fire Incidents

Dear Fire Service Colleague,

As a student of the National Fire Academy, Executive Fire Officer Program, I am required to complete an Applied Research Project. I am currently researching how to bridge the experience gap of our fire officers with the limited exposure they have to fire incidents. The purpose of the research is to identify alternatives to providing our fire officer’s more exposure and experience to fire events; increasing their knowledge, skills, and abilities for situational awareness and the command decision making process.

Your help in completing the survey will assist in answering the following research questions:

  • What alternatives exist to provide exposure to uncontrolled fire events?
  • What alternatives exist to provide exposure to controlled fire events?
  • What alternatives exist to provide exposure to simulated fire events?
  • What are the potential strengths to each of the identified alternatives?
  • What are the potential weaknesses to each of the identified alternatives?

For the purpose of the project, uncontrolled fire events are defined as an actual fire incidents or any fire that threatens to destroy life, property, or natural resources. Controlled fire events will be defined as anytime there are flames at a controlled live fire training environment; whether it be in an acquired structure or a state-of-the-art fire training facility. Simulated fire events will be defined as something that is made to look, feel, or behave like a fire incident that can be used to train people.
