Assistant Fire Chief

The City of Dayton, Ohio seeks a progressive, experienced individual to fill the rank of Assistant Fire Chief. This is a multi-incumbent position reporting directly to the Chief. The successful applicant may be assigned to manage the Strategic Programs & Safety Division or the Support Services and Resource Management Division of the Dayton Fire Department.

The position requires an experienced, qualified individual who possesses excellent technical, command, leadership, planning, administrative, interpersonal and communication skills to implement and manage a clear vision for the assigned division based upon department, city and community values which reflect a strong commitment to quality customer service, performance management and cultural diversity.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Assistant Chiefs within the Dayton Fire Department manage a Fire Department Division, they are expected to develop and manage the budget within their assigned division, and will review specifications, records and reports to determine the operating needs and service demands of their assigned division. They oversee budgetary control mechanisms to keep controllable costs within budgeted limits. All Assistant Chiefs must be knowledgeable and able to apply the principles and practices of modern fire fighting, incident command, fire fighting equipment, fire prevention, EMS, rescue and hazardous materials into everyday practice. Assistant Chiefs must have the ability to maintain managerial control under extremely stressful conditions, effectively plan, evaluate, assign and coordinate activities performed by Fire Department units and personnel. The Assistant Chiefs will develop programs and plans for more effective and efficient fire protection and public safety. Assistant Chiefs assume responsibilities of the Fire Chief when so designated.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: This position requires a seasoned veteran who has moved progressively through fire management positions. The best candidate will demonstrate exceptional leadership, management, technical and team skills. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college is preferred with ten (10) years of management level experience.

A Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business or Fire Sciences can be substituted for two (2) years management level experience.

For each year of experience in fire related services, one (1) year management level experience may be substituted.

All candidates must possess and maintain current state and department mandated Emergency Medical Technician certifications. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as a condition of employment.

Candidates without a Bachelor’s degree will be expected to obtain a degree within the time frame as set forth by the City Manager.

SALARY RANGE: $86,528.00 - $98,612.80 depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits package.
