OMDA Members: Lead Content Legislation - Congressional Contact Requested

The United States House of Representatives is currently debating legislation (H.R. 412) which would exempt youth-model motorcycles and ATVs from the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008.  The CPSIA requires the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to remove from the market any product intended for children under 12 years of age that contains lead components.  Youth-model motorcycles and ATVs have battery compartments and valve stems that contain lead components – these are not items that are easily accessible and do not represent any likelihood of ingesting lead content.  Despite this, the CPSC has stated that they must strictly interpret the law as it was written and cannot exclude youth-model ATVs and motorcycles without a change in the law.  Hence the need for H.R. 412

Kudos to OMDA & OMDA’s President, Kevin Mishey from Mid-Ohio Honda Yamaha Kawasaki in Mount Vernon,  for convincing congressman Bob Gibbs (R-Lakeville), to be the first Ohio member of Congress to co-sponsor this important legislation for our industry.  We encourage you to follow Kevin’s lead by taking just a few moments of your time to contact your member of Congress.
