Wireless Broadband Access for Members

Through the able work of several member volunteers, NCPLA was able to gain hard-wired broadband Internet access to the Legislative Building “Phone Room” a couple of years ago.  This service is provided via an AT&T DSL line for which the NCPLA pays. We have received many positive comments from members about the usefulness of this.

We began to explore the availability of wireless broadband for NCPLA members last year.  In the past, there had been concerns about problems this might cause with the separate, secure legislative network and related issues.  I am pleased to report that those hurdles have been overcome and with the technical assistance of Dennis McCarty and others, wireless broadband will be available in the Phone Room and 1000 quadrant of the Legislative Building.  The “pipe” is not any bigger than it is currently for the Phone Room hard-wire broadband, but should be adequate for the expected occasional use by our members.

NCPLA provides the hard-wire broadband access in the phone booths as a public service to members and the public alike.  At least initially however, the wireless access will be available to members only as a benefit of being an NCPLA member.  Details will be forthcoming about obtaining the password for access.

We would invite your feedback on both the wired and wireless broadband service at the building.  Depending on member sentiments, we may look toward expanding the service to cover other areas of the legislative grounds.
