Publications Development Council Seeks new Member

NATIONAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION seeks volunteer for the

PUBLICATIONS DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL

The vacancy is for Oct. 1, 2011. We are seeking applicants now to help with transition.

Purpose of the CDC

The Publications Development Council coordinates the development of a high quality publications program that meets member needs, advances the field of career development, and increases the number of publications generating income for NCDA activities.

 

CDC's Goal

  • Approve 1-2 new major publications annually for NCDA publication

  • Approve 2-3 minor publications (monograph series) annually for NCDA publication

Criteria for Selection of Members

The president, PDC Board Liaison, and PDC Chair will make the selection of one new council member based on the following:

  1. NCDA member in good standing

  2. History with publication development, staff development, or marketing

  3. Ability to attend and actively participate in the Publications Development Council meetings/calls

  4. While on the council, members cannot promote own publications

 

Applications will be accepted until September 1st of each year. Council members will review all applications received at that time. All applicants will be notified no later than October 15th regarding the status of their application.

 

NCDA members interested in serving on this council or wishing to nominate someone should send a message of interest along with supporting documentation (vita, resume, etc.) to Mary Ann Powell at mpowell@ncda.org. Include your relevant publications experience and ability to attend the meetings of the council.

Council Membership and Chair

  • Council members shall serve for a term of 4 years with ¼ of the membership rotating off each year.

  • An open council membership term will begin October 1st of each year and will end September 30th of each year.

  • The chair should be recommended by the PDC members and approved by the NCDA Board.

 

Scheduled Meetings

The Publications Development Council will meet up to four times annually, one or two face-to-face meetings and 2 or 3 conference calls:

Two face-to-face Publications Development Council meetings per year:

  1. One summer meeting held during the annual conference (own expense). Meeting date set for June 2012. Attendance at the June 29, 2011 meeting is requested to ensure a smooth transition of council members.

  2. One fall/winter meeting held at NCDA Headquarters if deemed necessary by NCDA Board of Directors. (cost covered by NCDA)

 

Council Responsibilities

  •  
    1. Review and edit NCDA guidelines for selection of new publications and resale products; differentiate between major and minor publications.

    2. Develop suggestions for a marketing plan for NCDA publications.

    3. Solicit and review proposals, select projects, coordinate with staff coordinator about contracts, review manuscripts and provide feedback to authors, and forward materials to copy editors.

    4. Develop a vision for the council; set long term publications goals.

    5. Receive and review resale items for potential distribution agreements.

    6. Work with the board liaison to identify ways to post publications “teasers”, table of contents and chapters (to aid counselor educators) that will be posted on Career Convergence magazine site.

    7. Report to the NCDA Board of Directors providing feedback about budgets for publications.

    8. Develop a publications calendar and project new release dates.

    9. Suggest journals or newsletters that might review NCDA publications.

 

HQ Coordinator and Management Team

  1. Collect potential manuscripts for NCDA publication; communicate with the authors.

  2. Coordinate all details for the publications council meetings including copies, distribution, communication and arrangements with members.

  3. Collect potential resale resources for council review; communicate with authors and publishers.

  4. Manage publication process for books already in the pipeline; line up copy editors, graphic artist, printer, etc. Complete all forms (LOC, ISBN, Copyright Registration, etc.) associated with publications.

  5. Post all notices to the NCDA website, write articles for the newsletters/journal, correspond via e-mail and phone with potential authors and editors.

  6. Coordinate the annual publications calendar; project deadlines.

  7. Coordinate the marketing efforts for the council, including ad development and dissemination, communications with PR and marketing committees, etc.

  8. Update publications catalog each year.

  9. Coordinate the complimentary mailings of NCDA new publications.

  10. Act as liaison between publications development council and the NCDA board.

  11. Provide administrative support and project management for the council.

  12. Calculate and distribute royalty payments.

  13. Coordinate the review process of NCDA publications by other journals or newsletters.
