An Ethical Dilemma: Bias and the Implications for Career Development Professionals

Description

Everyone has biases, but how often do we admit them and consider their impact on the services we provide to our clients? It is important to consistently assess our values and beliefs in relation to what we believe about our clients and our abilities to assist them. In this session, we will take a closer look at demographic changes and societal issues that impact our work. We will examine our personal beliefs and biases and how they can interfere with our service to our clients. As we review ethical standards and ethical decision-making models, we will learn strategies to help us work through these challenges.

Objectives

By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:

• Recognize personal beliefs, biases and the impact on providing career advise

• Develop an increased awareness of the tensions that exist between values and expectations of practice

• Review specific areas of the NCDA Code of Ethics as it relates to competency, bias, and multiculturalism

• Identify ethical-decision making models that guides practice

• Acknowledge differences between ethical and legal situations

About the Speaker:

Dr. Marian Higgins is passionate about helping people excel and reach their full potential. As the Associate Director of Diversity Programs and Graduate Student Programming at the University of Georgia Career Center, she finds fulfillment in coaching students and staff. In her role, she contributes to the leadership and day-to-day functions of a premier and award winning career center. Marian supervises staff while also coordinating the diversity initiatives for the office and provides consultations to employers on effective diversity recruitment strategies. She also organizes the career programming initiatives for graduate students.

As the owner of Be Inspired Counseling and Consulting, LLC, Marian specializes in helping people with all things work-related including making choices about career paths, dealing with work stress, workplace diversity issues, work or career transitions, and workplace relationship challenges. She is an experienced speaker and consultant with expertise in areas such as diversity and inclusion, supervision and management, career preparation, and employee development. She has been a featured speaker for varying audiences including national, state, and local organizations. She is a recipient of the Southern Association of Colleges and Employers (SoACE) Research Fellowship and the Champion of Diversity Award.

Marian received her Ph.D. in Counseling and Personnel Services from the University of Georgia, Master of Science degree in Counseling from the University of Memphis, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia and a National Certified Counselor.
