Palliative Care Network
Palliative care is active and comfort oriented comprehensive management of the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and existential needs of patients. It is especially suited to the care of people with incurable, progressive illnesses where the focus is comfort and maximizing quality of life. Palliative care embraces the philosophy of hospice care and seeks to disseminate this approach to broader groups of patients and to integrate it into clinical practice.
Palliative care services is a broad term which covers provision of care in both community and inpatient settings. Services are multi-disciplinary, interdisciplinary, or uni-professional with collaboration from other health professional; and may be provided by individuals or teams. They are staffed by professionals who have extensive experience and/or additional training in aspects of palliative care/hospice.
Palliative care specialist refers to care provided by a health care professional that maintains palliative care as his/her focus. Care is provided by individuals with national, state and/ or local recognition and have demonstrated educational and clinical experience in this practice specialty.
