ECA - 2012 Convention - Call for Papers - Health Communication Interest Group

Call for Papers
Health Communication Interest Group

103rd Annual Eastern Communication Association Convention

“Transitions”

Cambridge, Massachusetts

Royal Sonesta Hotel
April 26-29, 2012

Submission Deadline: October 14, 2011

The Health Communication Interest Group invites submission of competitive papers, thematic program/panel proposals, performances, and innovative programming alternatives (e.g., roundtable discussion, debates, open forums, and community programs) for the 103rd annual convention of the Eastern Communication Association.

The Health Communication Interest Group will find topics connected to the convention theme – “Transitions” – especially appealing; however, please do not feel compelled to include the word transitions (or transitioning or transitional or transitory) in the title(s). Rather, let’s spend more energy thinking about how transitions are an innate aspect of health and medicine generally, and health communication specifically. Papers, panels, and performances that speak to macro, meso, and micro transitions will be welcomed. Macro transitions might include the move from physician-centered to patient-centered communication or the inclusion of interpersonal and communication skills as a competency in graduate medical education. Meso transitions might include organizational change at a healthcare facility or methodological transitions in our own subfield. And micro transitions might include an individual pathography as a move from the “kingdom of the well” to the “kingdom of the sick” (Sontag, Illness as Metaphor) or the conversational shifts required of clinicians to break bad news. Please also consider our location in Cambridge and proximity to Harvard Medical School as a factor. Finally, our primary convention planner – Nancy J. Willets – has asked the interest group planners to discourage panel proposals that feature presenters from one institution; please cast your net as wide as possible as you consider representatives for your proposed panel.

The 103rd ECA convention will feature programming on the convention theme, short courses, poster sessions, roundtables and panels. Special events include a Welcome Reception on Thursday evening (April 26th), an awards banquet on Friday (April 27th), and the President’s Reception on Saturday (April 28th). The second annual James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference (USC) will also be held during the convention (the USC submission deadline is December 17th). For more information about the 2012 convention and the Undergraduate Scholars Conference, please visit http://www.ecasite.org.

Submissions to the Health Communication Interest Group must adhere to the following guidelines:

In order to receive full consideration, all completed papers and program/panel proposals must be received by Friday, October 14, 2011.

Submissions must be sent via email, with attachment(s) in MS Word format, to the Program Planner:

Jay Baglia, PhD who can be reached at baglia@kutztown.edu

The email subject line should include the text “ECA 2012 submission” and the title of the paper/panel/program.  The email text should include any requests for technology (see below).

All submissions must include a statement of professional responsibility (see below).

Competitive Papers

Abstracts or incomplete papers are not acceptable in this category.  Submissions of completed papers should be sent via two separate Microsoft Word files:

1. The first file should include the title page with author(s) name and contact information (affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, and email address), and a 100 - 150 word abstract.  If the paper is multi-authored, please indicate who will be presenting at the convention.

2. The second file should contain the text of the paper starting with the 100 - 150 word abstract. All author identifiers should be removed (including previous scholarly works cited in the paper and listed in the reference section). Excluding notes and references, papers should be no longer than 25 double-spaced pages. Papers longer than 25 pages may not be reviewed.

The word “Debut” should be marked on all papers by authors who have not presented previously at a regional or national convention.  Papers authored by current undergraduate or graduate students should include the word “STUDENT” in the upper right-hand corner of the first page of the manuscript file.

Program/Panel Proposals

All program/panel submissions should be sent as single Microsoft Word file, and must include:

  1. A thematic title for the program/panel.

  2. The names, institutional affiliations, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses of all participants (including chairs and respondents).  We request that chairs not serve as respondents.

  3. Titles and 100 – 150 word abstracts for each paper or presentation.

  4. The program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program.

  5. A rationale for the program/panel.

Statement of Professional Responsibility

When submitting a paper or panel proposal for review, the following statement must be included from each participant: “In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I agree to present this paper or program/panel if it is accepted and programmed. I further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA's annual meeting must register and pay the required fees and that doing so is considered a professional responsibility.”

The panel organizer is responsible for obtaining this statement from each presenter prior to the paper/program/panel being officially programmed for presentation at the convention. Papers and panels without this statement will not be programmed.

ECA Technology Policy

Please visit www.ecasite.org/pdf/technologypolicy042007.pdf to review the ECA Technology Policy, the complete statement about the provision of media technology by ECA for convention participants.

Note that requests for technology support will not be met unless they are received by the interest group planner at the time of the paper or program submission.
