Communicating the Possible
April 2 – April 7, 2013
The Graduate Student Caucus invites all graduate student members of CSCA to submit competitive papers, programs, and interactive panels to be considered for programming at the 2013 CSCA conference to be held in Kansas City, Missouri. Our interest group focuses on celebrating graduate student work and providing development opportunities in relation to teaching, service, and scholarship. This year we especially encourage graduate students to embrace the convention theme, Communicating the Possible, thinking outside the box to creatively engage appreciative inquiry and explore the transformative possibilities of communication and its capacity for emotion, compassion, hope, and forgiveness in a variety of contexts.
We welcome a variety of formats, including competitive papers, collaborative student panels, roundtable discussions, spotlight, performance, and dialogue sessions. To re-emphasize the spirit of possibilities, we also invite you to contact us if you have an idea that does not fit within these formats but would benefit our graduate student members. Possible topics for papers and panels include: participating in possible, partnering outside the academy, exploring publication possibilities, beyond social media in the classroom, activism/slacktivism, communicating beyond the text, envisioning possibilities for the teacher/scholar, communication at its the highest potential, and making positive impacts in applied contexts. The list does not stop there, though, because we hope you will engage the conference theme in your own creative ways.
Quality scholarship and creative ideas is our main goal. In an effort to encourage collaboration among graduate students, we have developed a Facebook page to create space for brainstorming, planning, and networking. Please visit, join, and participate in the conversations about the upcoming convention at: http://www.facebook.com/groups/414581461886458/.
Awards: The Graduate Student Caucus presents certificates to the top three competitive papers submitted to the interest group. The top paper of these three will earn a $50 award. Each of the two others will earn a $25 award.
Guidelines for Submission:
(1) Papers: Only complete papers will be accepted. Papers must conform to APA standards and include a title page that is a separate document for the paper, allowing author identity to be concealed. On the title page, indicate the CSCA membership status of author(s). Remove all author references in the text of the paper. Submissions to the Graduate Student Caucus may not be co-authored with faculty mentors/advisors or exceed the 25 page limit (not including references/appendix).
(2) Panels: Individuals proposing panels must complete and use the 2013 CSCA Panel Proposal Request Form available on the CSCA website. Panel submissions must also include the following: (a) title, (b) abstract, (c) a complete list of participants along with their institutional affiliations, contact information (address, e-mail, and telephone), and if they are CSCA members. For panel proposals, we strongly recommend collaboration with graduate students from multiple institutions.
All papers must be submitted electronically using Microsoft Word. Documents sent using any other format will be returned to the sender. An e-mail acknowledging receipt of paper and panel proposals will be sent for each submission. If media is absolutely essential to your presentation, these requests must be made at the time of submission and will be closely examined before approval. Laptop computers will not be made available for presentations. In addition, your submission implies that you agree to follow appropriate presentation guidelines if you paper/panel is accepted (i.e., it is generally unacceptable to read your paper to those in attendance). We look forward to engaging topics, presenters, and discussions.
Submissions must be received by October 5, 2012.
Send all submissions electronically to:
