CSCA - 2012 - Organizational and Professional Communication Division - Call for Papers/Reminders

Hello CSCA Organizational and Professional Communication Division members!

I hope that you are having a productive yet restful summer so far.  I am writing to you in anticipation of our upcoming conference in Cleveland.  As most of you know, the theme for next year’s conference is “Connecting in Cleveland” and we are encouraging intersections that unite us as communication educators and scholars.  Please view the official “Call for Papers” for the OPC division, which is pasted at the bottom of this e-bulletin. You can also access the call at: https://associationdatabase.com/aws/CSCA/pt/sp/callforpapers

As you will notice, the deadline for submissions is September 30, 2011, which is quickly approaching.  When thinking about your submission(s) please consider some of the items we discussed at last year’s business meeting.  For those of you that were not in attendance, here is a recap of what was discussed for potential panel ideas for CSCA 2012:

1.)  “Speed Mentoring” session—We have had this as a session in the past and it has always been a huge success.  Inviting senior scholars to speak with graduate students or junior scholars for a few minutes is a great way to establish connections or get advice on current projects.  I have some folks in mind that would be great mentors but if any of you have additional suggestions (or would like to volunteer to participate as a mentor), please send me an email.

2.) Practitioner/Scholar panel—There was a discussion at the business meeting regarding a panel where we invite practitioners in professions such as consulting or training and development from the local Cleveland area to discuss how communication informs their work.  Organizational communication scholars who teach in those areas could also participate in this panel as a way to engage the practitioner/scholar dyad.  Another approach to this panel is to have organizational communication scholars who also have experience outside of academia in consulting and/or training and development discuss their experiences.  There are a number of ways to structure this panel so if anyone has additional ideas or is interested in participating, please contact me.

3.) Community in Practice—Since the theme of this years conference is all about “connecting” it seems useful to channel the history of Cleveland and how organizational and professional communication might relate or inform the city’s history.  For example, Cleveland is home to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and also serves as a hub for aviation education boasting excellent academies and learning institutions. Perhaps scholars who do research in these kinds of areas (either music or aviation) would be interested in participating in a panel that makes connections between communication research and Cleveland history.  There are several other ways to bridge communication research and the city of Cleveland so if you have ideas, or are interested in participating, please send me an email.

4.) G.I.F.T—We always encourage submissions to the G.I.F.T division so that we can have an OPC presence there.  As a reminder, (and for our newer members), G.I.F.T. is a round-table discussion of class tested teaching activities appropriate in communication courses.

These ideas listed above are just a few ways to hone the conference theme of “Connecting in Cleveland.”  As always, you are welcome to submit papers or panel ideas on any topic of interest. However, submissions that focus on the conference theme are encouraged.  If you have any other ideas for potential panels, please do not hesitate to contact me.  Again, the call for papers is pasted below and can also be accessed on the CSCA website.  My contact information is listed there as well as at the end of this email.  I will continue to update you via email especially as we get closer to the deadline.

I look forward to your submissions and “connecting” with you in Cleveland!

Best,

Jaime

ORGANIZATIONAL & PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION
INTEREST GROUP

Central States Communication Association in Cleveland, OH      March 28-31, 2012

“Connecting in Cleveland”

The Organizational and Professional Communication Interest group welcomes submissions of papers and panel proposals for the 2011 CSCA Conference. Any topic related to organizational and professional communication is welcomed; however, we encourage submissions that focus on the convention theme, “Connecting in Cleveland.”  The theme of Connecting in Cleveland invites members to reflect on those core concepts, fundamental questions, topics and issues that transcend individual areas of study, developing programs that highlight key intersections that unite us as communication educators. For example, scholars and teachers with different epistemological perspectives and methodological approaches might join together to examine central issues or shared topics of study from alternative perspectives.  Or, we as academics may try and “connect” with practitioners in Cleveland who work in industries such as consulting, training and development, etc. to see how our research interests coupled with their practical applications may help inform advancement in Organizational Communication scholarship.

The division is interested in celebrating our strong scholarship and suggesting new directions/outlets for our scholarship and teaching. As a result, we encourage competitive paper submissions from new and established scholars as well as students. Planners are interested in all types of formats including: traditional panels, roundtable discussions, and working research sessions. Priority will be given to proposals that integrate alternative and interactive formats and that focus on the division interests and the convention theme.
