"Connecting in Cleveland”: Exploring Intersections that Unite a Discipline

March 28 – 31, 2012

The Basic Course Interest Group invites all members of CSCA to submit competitive papers and panels to be considered for programming at the 2012 CSCA convention in Cleveland. Our interest group focuses on issues related to the pedagogy and administration of basic communication courses.

We welcome a range of topics encompassing the basic course.  We especially encourage members to develop roundtable discussions, dialogue sessions, debates, and spotlight sessions related to the convention theme. Possible topics for papers and panels include: approaches to general education at various institutions, foundational basic course issues and connecting those issues to other courses, using emerging technologies (e.g., Twitter, Facebook) to connect with students in the basic course, learning communities, connecting students to the major, shaping the basic course as an invitation to citizenship, and working with international students in public speaking classes. In light of the conference theme, we strongly encourage the submission of panels that are co-sponsored with other CSCA units.

Awards: The Basic Course Interest Group presents two awards.  The Doug Trank Award is presented to the top rated paper and includes a $50.00 prize and a certificate. The Melissa Beall Award is presented to the top rated Panel or Roundtable Discussion and also includes a $50.00 prize and a certificate.

Guidelines for Submission

Papers: Only completed papers will be accepted. Papers must conform to APA standards and include a title page that is a separate document from the paper, allowing author identity to be concealed. Remove all author references in the text of the paper and in the properties of the paper. Students (including graduate students) should type "STUDENT" on the upper right-hand corner of the title page. Indicate if author(s) is/are CSCA members.

Panels: Individuals proposing panels must complete the 2012 CSCA Special Panel Proposal Request Form available at the CSCA website. Panel submissions must also include the following: (a) title, (b) abstract, and (c) a complete list of participants along with their institutional affiliations and contact information (address, e-mail, and telephone).

All submissions must be sent as e-mail attachments using Microsoft Word format. Documents not sent in this format will be returned to the sender.  An e-mail acknowledging the receipt of the paper or panel submissions will be sent for each submission. Most of the rooms at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel will include a projector that presenters can connect to their laptops. No other media requests will be available. This includes Internet connections, so plan accordingly. Your submission implies that you agree to follow appropriate presentation guidelines if your paper/panel is accepted (i.e., it is generally unacceptable to read your paper to those in attendance).

Submissions must be received by September 30, 2011.
